The region of Veneto is , in terms of surface, the eighth Italian region (18,390 km ²) and the fifth for the number of residents. The population is more concentrated along the side of the Po Valley that goes from Verona to Venice, and which includes large and important urban centers. Its territory is a lot varied and ranges from mountainous areas, with the massifs of the Dolomites in the north, to a large plain, which occupies more than half of its surface and, in a lesser extent, in areas with hilly formations. Numerous rivers flow from reliefs that create different orographic basins and which flow into the Adriatic Sea. The boundaries are marked naturally by the course of the river Po and its delta in the south and east from the Tagliamento (Friuli Venezia Giulia), Lake Garda delimits in good part the western border with Lombardy, while the Asiago plateau and the Dolomites determine the one with the South Tyrol and Austria. Another element that characterizes the region is the hydrographical basin of the river Piave, entirely enclosed in the boundaries of the region. The Veneto is divided into seven provinces: Belluno, Verona, Vicenza, Treviso, Padua, Rovigo and Venice; street development is concentrated particularly in Padua, Mestre and Treviso so that some speak of a megalopolis with more than 3,200,000 residents.
